History

Durbanville Central, situated within the broader Durbanville area, has deep historical roots dating back to the mid-1600s when a freshwater spring, now located behind the Durbanville Children's Home, was designated by the Dutch East India Company (VOC) as a crucial water replenishment station for travellers journeying from Cape Town to southern Africa's interior. The late 1600s saw the VOC allocate farms to free burghers surrounding the town, many of which, such as Bloemendal, Meerendal, Diemersdal, and Altydgedacht, are still renowned today for their wine production. The 1806 allocation of the first residential properties marked Durbanville's initial steps towards development. By 1826, the inauguration of a Dutch Reformed Church laid the foundation for a burgeoning village, which soon flourished between the church and the overnight stop.

Renamed D'Urban in 1836 in honour of Sir Benjamin d'Urban, the Governor of the Cape Colony, the village underwent a final name change to Durbanville in 1886 to avoid confusion with the port city of Durban in the east. The late 19th century saw significant infrastructure development, with the establishment of a courthouse, jail, and magistrate from the 1870s, effectively forming the Magisterial District of Bellville. By 1897, a village management board was set up, followed by the establishment of a municipality in 1901, with John King serving as its inaugural mayor. The King Brothers Wagon Works, once the largest in South Africa, played a pivotal role in driving the local economy around the turn of the century. Despite losing its municipal status in 1996, Durbanville remains a uniquely significant town within the broader City of Cape Town, maintaining its rich historical heritage and character.
