Founded in 1822 on a portion of the historic Vergelegen farm, Somerset West derives its name from Lord Charles Somerset, a British governor of the Cape Colony. The suffix 'West' was appended post-1825 to distinguish it from Somerset East in the Eastern Cape. The construction of Sir Lowry's Pass in the 1830s, named after Governor Sir Lowry Cole, facilitated connectivity with eastern outposts over the Hottentots-Holland mountains. In the 1960s, the AECI factory situated between Somerset West and Strand gained global recognition as the world's second-largest dynamite production facility.
