History

Richmond is part of Goodwood, a suburb established in 1905 and named after the Goodwood Racecourse in England, as the founders intended to create a racing centre. Although a racetrack was constructed, it was only used for one meeting before being abandoned.

The first railway station in Goodwood was built in 1905. Today, the area features five railway stations: Goodwood, Vasco, and Elsies River on the Cape Town-Johannesburg main line, and Monte Vista and Acacia Park on the secondary line connecting Cape Town and Bellville.
