History
Originally, Green Point was a coastal plain at the foot of Signal Hill with sand dunes. Historic maps refer to it as a "Hottentot village" inhabited by Khoisan descendants who farmed on Green Point Common before European settlers arrived. The Dutch East India Company later used the Common for grazing, and it was called "Waterplaats" by Dutch settlers.

Following British control in 1795, the city expanded toward Green Point, driven by harbour development and population growth. Horse racing thrived on the Common, and the area saw military use during the Second Boer War. It was designated as a "whites-only" area during apartheid, although it had non-white residents.

Cape Town Stadium replaced the former Green Point Stadium in 2010, and Green Point Common is now a focal attraction with indigenous gardens. The area has been a focal point for debates on affordable housing and the Reclaim The City movement since 2017.
