Green Point, Cape Town

Green Point at a glance

Green Point, known as Groenpunt in Afrikaans, is an upscale neighbourhood situated on Cape Town's Atlantic Seaboard, northwest of the city centre. This district is a renowned leisure destination, anchored by the picturesque Green Point Park, featuring lakes, jogging paths, a hedge maze and a biodiversity garden filled with indigenous plants. The iconic Cape Town Stadium, a modern sports and concert venue, graces the park and offers guided tours. The neighbourhood's culinary scene is diverse, with a plethora of options, including espresso bars, Italian restaurants, and burger joints along Main Road. Nearby, along the Sea Point Promenade, one can find steakhouses and seafood eateries, making Green Point a vibrant and gastronomically enticing area to explore.

Green Point is a fantastic choice for anyone looking to start or relocate their business as it provides an abundance of amenities, attractions and a thriving community. No matter what sector your business falls into, Green Point is a prime destination.

Originally, Green Point was a coastal plain at the foot of Signal Hill with sand dunes. Historic maps refer to it as a "Hottentot village" inhabited by Khoisan descendants who farmed on Green Point Common before European settlers arrived. The Dutch East India Company later used the Common for grazing, and it was called "Waterplaats" by Dutch settlers.

Following British control in 1795, the city expanded toward Green Point, driven by harbour development and population growth. Horse racing thrived on the Common, and the area saw military use during the Second Boer War. It was designated as a "whites-only" area during apartheid, although it had non-white residents.

Cape Town Stadium replaced the former Green Point Stadium in 2010, and Green Point Common is now a focal attraction with indigenous gardens. The area has been a focal point for debates on affordable housing and the Reclaim The City movement since 2017.
